American High School

Summer School and Credit Recovery Options

Who goes to summer school?

The purpose of Summer School is to provide an opportunity for:  Students who have D’s and F’s in courses needed to graduate.  Students may not use summer school to accelerate graduation.

How does my student sign up for summer school?

Students can see their counselor in their office at brunch, lunch, or after school when we open up the registration window in April of the current school year.

Students cannot see their counselor during class hours for a summer school registration form.

What do I do if my child received a D or an F final grade for the second semester of school, which I just learned from the report card that was mailed home?  Is it too late for summer school for the second semester?

If a student wants to try to get into summer school, students report to the summer school office at the High School where summer school is being held.  The last day to request schedule corrections and or changes is June 15th and 16th from 8 AM to 12 NOON.  PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT IRVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL ABOUT SUMMER SCHOOL QUESTIONS UNTIL THE SUMMER SCHOOL OFFICE OPENS FOR SCHOOL BUSINESS.

Usually they are mailed out in June

What if my child does not get their schedule in the mail?

If a schedule does not arrive or is incorrect, the student must report to Irvington High School on the day that they designate for this issue.

June 15th and 16th from 8 AM to 12 NOON

What if we do not want our child to attend summer school?  Should my child simply not show up for the first day of class?

Students can go in to the office at Irvington HS in June request schedule changes, drops, or corrections.

June 15th and 16th from 8 AM to 12 NOON

STUDENTS CAN BE IN DANGER OF NOT GRADUATING IF THEY DO NOT SIGN UP FOR COURSEWORK THAT IS RECOMMENDED BY THEIR COUNSELOR.  STUDENTS WITH "F" GRADES LOSE CREDITS TOWARDS THEIR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA AND ARE AT-RISK OF NOT GRADUATING WITH THEIR CLASS ON TIME. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO TURN THEIR FORM IN.   STUDENTS WITH "D" GRADES WHO DO NOT ATTEND SUMMER SCHOOL WILL NOT MOVE UP TO THE NEXT LEVEL COURSE (I.E. MATH, SCIENCE, & LANGUAGE CLASSES REQUIRE A "C" OR ABOVE FOR PLACEMENT AT THE HIGHER LEVEL).

What days will summer school be in session?

Fremont Unified School District's Summer School Information Page

Students do not attend on Fridays (three-day weekends).  July 4th is a holiday.

Please read the summer school letter that families were supposed to retain after signing the summer school form.  It contains important information about attendance.

Any absence in excess of two days for any reason will result in an automatic withdrawl from Summer School.  Three (3) tardies equal one (1) absence.  Registered students not in attendance on the first day of classes will be dropped to make room for other students.  School is a closed campus.  Students cannot leave during the break but must leave the campus immediately after their class is over.

What if my child takes medication at school and is going to summer school?

If your student takes medication, either attach a copy of the medical form on file at American for this year.  Or,  please fill out this form and attach it to your child’s summer school form.  http://tinyurl.com/qeuk7e7 is the link for the form.

Fremont Adult School and Robertson Continuation High School

Fremont Adult School offers courses on a limited basis with priority given to seniors; students must be 16 to attend. Fremont Adult School offers courses each quarter; fall, winter and spring and sometimes summer. Students must meet with their counselor or administrator to complete required paperwork and selection of the correct courses prior to registering at the Adult School. Attendance policies are very strict and allow for very few absences regardless of the excuse. Adult School offers classes for credit in cases where a student has failed a class only; not for grade improvement.

Quarter 1-Sept.-Nov.

Quarter 2: Dec.-Feb.

Quarter 3: March-May

Robertson Continuation High School also has three semesters for students, giving students a third semester to make up credits.   Like Fremont Adult School, there are less credits required for graduation at Robertson.  There are other features in place to assist students who need an alternative environment to a traditional High School.  Click here for their website.

There are other alternative schools in Fremont Unified and your student's counselor can arrange an appointment with you to discuss all of these alternatives.  Find their contact information here.
