9th Grade Dance Project 2018

 

Overview: Students will work together in small groups to: learn a dance, demonstrate the dance to their peers, teach the dance to their peers, and research the dance. Students will write a 1 page paper on the dance.

 

Objectives: Students will gain practice in the following areas:

1. Researching          2.Writing         3.Demonstrating       4.Peer teaching

 

Resources/Material needed:

Library research, internet research, music, and a positive attitude.

 

Activities and Procedures:

1. Students will have a group of 6-7 people (size of group is dependent on size of class). Groups are responsible for researching a dance that they are assigned and will demonstrate and teach it to their peers.

 

2. A research paper must be submitted to Turnitin.com on or before the last day of the dance unit January 26, 2018. The research paper must include:

- 12 point font, New Times Roman font, single spaced, 1 full page

- ALL information in the paper must be related to the topic, organized and well constructed.

- Each of the items below must be done by a different member of the group, each paper 'MUST' be one full page in length (one of the specified topics below may be done twice BUT all 5 topics must be covered by the group and written individually). Paper must be submitted by each student to their teacher.

3- FITNESS BENEFITS-HOW DOES DANCE CONTRIBUTE TO AN INDIVIDUALS HEALTH?

4-YOUR OPINON ON THE DANCE: INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE DANCE, WHAT YOU LIKED/DISLIKED ABOUT THE DANCE, WHAT WENT WRONG/RIGHT, OVERALL THOUGHTS ABOUT THE UNIT AND THE DANCE YOU WERE ASSIGNED

5-HOW WOULD YOU MODERNIZE YOUR DANCE? WHAT STEPS WOULD YOU REMOVE, WHAT STEPS WOULD YOU ADD AND WHY

 

3. The assigned dance must be presented to the class as a group. Each member must demonstrate the dance and be involved in teaching it. The group will have one day (part of the period) to present the material to the class. It is suggested to be as creative as possible. Make it fun! If your group wants to dress up or come in costumes, please do.

 

4. Grades will be based on:

50% for quality of paper:

a. Following directions, all topics covered, 1 full page, 12 Pt. font, New Roman, single spaced

b. Quality of information

c. Organization and construction of paragraph

d. Mechanics: grammar, spelling

Plagiarism will result in failure of the unit.

 

50% for quality of presentation:

a. Was it well organized? Did you speak clearly and concisely when speaking to the class?

b. Did you spend enough time preparing and practicing? Was each member on beat? Did all members know the dance without help?

c. Were you successful in teaching the dance to your classmates in the time you had available?

d. Was the group enthusiastic when performing and teaching?

 

 

**You should be sure everyone in your group knows what he or she is doing and is well-practiced. Daily participation points during this unit will be based on each student learning their classmates’ dances and will be graded on their effort, courtesy and how well they master each dance.
