Meet Your New Principal – Megan Barrington – American High School

How long have you been with FUSD? – I started with FUSD in 2004 and have been at American since 2016.

How long have you worked in education? – This is my 19th year.

What is your educational background? - I moved around a lot as a student. I went to kindergarten in Alaska.  For me, elementary school included time in Louisiana and Texas.  I got to stay with the same classmates for a few years, finishing junior high in Texas as well.  Just before I started high school, my family moved to southern California and I didn’t know anyone on my first day of high school.  I moved to Berkeley for college and got my Masters from Cal State East Bay.

What will you bring to your school? – I know what it’s like to be the new kid in school and how important it is to feel embraced by your community.  We will strive to make sure every student feels like they’re a valued part of the Eagle Nation.  We will continue to maintain the academic and activity-rich learning environment that earned American a California Distinguished School Award last year.

What do you hope your students take away from this year? - I believe it is of critical importance that we provide opportunities for students to explore options before choosing a college or career path.  I want our students to realize that high school is a long journey with time to try new things, get involved, and make connections with other students and staff.

What can students/families expect this year? - As the biggest school in Fremont, we are constantly striving to make sure every student’s needs are met.  I believe it is impossible for students to learn when we are not providing for their basic needs.  Our community strongly supports the academic development of our students and we must work harder to support their mental health needs.   This year, our families can expect a strong focus on supporting the mental health of our student population.

Anything else you’d like the school community to know about you? – I have worked in this attendance area for 11 years.  When I left to spend a few years teaching in Dubai, I knew when I came back to the United States I wanted to work with these students again.  The diversity and energy of this part of Fremont makes it my favorite place to work.   I will continue to choose these kids again and again!
