Hello Parents/Guardians,

Since we were unable to hold a workshop in person this month, counselors have created a presentation for you on ways to support students during this time. Remember, you are not alone! We are here to help support your students through this challenging and unprecedented situation. Student safety, health, and overall well-being are our top priorities. We will continue to provide workshops, emails, and check-ins when we return from spring break.

Please find the link for the recorded presentation here: Supporting Our Students Together (Recording)

The google slides (with accessible hyperlinks) is linked here: Support Our Students Together (Google Slides)

Both the recording and google slides will also be posted on the AHS Counseling webpage.

We hope that you and your families have a restful and enjoyable spring break. Over the break, counselors will not be available for student virtual appointments. Please be aware that counselors may also not check School Loop, email, or voicemail over break. We will respond to all Loopmail, emails, and voicemails when we return from spring break.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a medical emergency or is in crisis, please dial 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Additional resources:

  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 (available 24 hours/day)

Hello Parents/Guardians,

We hope that you and your families are staying healthy and safe. Consistent routines, self-care, and exercise are very important and with our letter this week, we wanted to share resources to support you and your student. We also sent these resources to your students.

  • Helping your teen with social distancing:

https://www.mayoclinichealthsystem.org/hometown-health/speaking-of-health/helping-your-teen-with-social-distancing

Need help building a routine? Have your students try these tips!

  • Make a list of your daily tasks - write down everything you need to do
  • Use your list to create a schedule - consider what time of day you complete your best tasks. If you have more energy in the morning, focus on the work that requires more time.
  • Stay active during the day and take breaks during your school work hours.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Build in fun, self-care, relaxation, and connection with others.

We know that you may have questions and/or concerns during this time. Counselors are available Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 3:30pm. We regularly check School Loop, emails, and voicemails during these hours. Please be aware that counselors may not check School Loop, email, or voicemail on weekdays after 3:30pm or on weekends.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need something.

Take care,

Hello Parents/Guardians,

We hope that you and your families are staying healthy and safe. We understand that this may be a challenging time for you and your students. It is important to remember that your students may be worried or anxious about coronavirus, as well school closure, during this unique time. As parents/guardians, you play an incredibly important role in addressing these concerns and supporting your student. As we encourage them to practice self-care and develop routines, it is equally important that you practice your own self-care.

Counselors are also committed to staying connected to your students and sent the following email to them this morning:

Hello Students:

How is everyone doing? We know that the school closure is a significant adjustment from what everyone is used to. Don’t forget to practice self-care and maintain a routine while you are at home! Already bored? Check these out:

Your counselors are thinking of you and we wanted to remind you that we are still here for you during this time. Counselors are available Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 3:30pm. We regularly check School Loop, emails, and voicemails during these hours. Please be aware that counselors may not check School Loop, email, or voicemail on weekdays after 3:30pm or on weekends.

If you are experiencing an emergency or are in crisis, please dial 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Additional resources:

  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 (available 24 hours/day)
  • Alameda County Crisis Support Services Crisis Line: 1-800-309-2131 (24 hours/day)
  • Alameda County Crisis Support Services Local Text Line: TEXT SAFE TO 20121 (4:00 pm - 11:00 pm, 7 days/week). Available for Alameda County residents only.

To request a Zoom appointment with your counselor about a non-emergency situation, please send a message via School Loop, email, or leave a voicemail for your counselor. If you have preferred days/times to meet, please indicate these as well. All appointments must be confirmed by your counselor. Once confirmed, it is very important that you are available for your confirmed appointment time. If you are not available at your confirmed time, your appointment will be cancelled.

Virtual/distance counseling will be a little different than in-person counseling. It may feel a little uncomfortable, but please remember that your counselors are here to help you. If at any point a counselor is concerned about your safety, we will take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need something.

Take care,

Your AHS Counselors

Hello Parents/Guardians:

We hope that you and your families are staying healthy and safe. It is important to remember that your students may be worried or anxious about coronavirus, as well school closure, during this unique time. As parents/guardians, you play an incredibly important role in being able to address any concerns your students may currently have. Here are some helpful guidelines during this time:

  • Help your student set a schedule/daily routine. Structured days with regular mealtimes and bedtimes are an essential part to being healthy.
  • Stay connected. Social distancing is important, but it is also important to remain connected to others. Your student can have phone conversations, text, write emails, play board games, spend time with pets, and reach out to friends and family via facetime, google hangouts, or any other video platform.
  • Be mindful of media intake. Social media and the news can be overwhelming, and it may be helpful for your student (and you) to spend some time away from social media and/or the news each day.
  • Stay active. Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise each day. Some additional activities may include: drawing, coloring, journaling, listening to music, reading a book.
  • Remain calm and reassuring. Your students will react to and follow your verbal and nonverbal reactions.
  • Make yourself available. Your students may need extra attention from you and may want to discuss concerns, fears, and questions.
  • Keep talking. Tell your students that you will continue to keep them updated as you learn more. “Let them know that the lines of communication are going to be open,” says Dr. Domingues. “You can say, ‘Even though we don’t have the answers to everything right now, know that once we know more, mom or dad will let you know, too.’”

For additional information, we have linked a handout with some helpful resources: https://higherlogicdownload.s3.amazonaws.com/NASN/3870c72d-fff9-4ed7-833f-215de278d256/UploadedImages/PDFs/02292020_NASP_NASN_COVID-19_parent_handout.pdf

We also know that you may have questions and/or concerns during this time. Here are the best ways to contact your student’s counselor while school is closed.

Counselors will be available Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 3:30pm. Counselors will regularly check School Loop, emails, and voicemails during these hours. Please be aware that counselors may not check School Loop, email, or voicemail on weekdays after 3:30pm or on weekends.

If either you or your student are experiencing an emergency or are in crisis, please dial 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Additional resources:

  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 (available 24 hours/day)
  • Alameda County Crisis Support Services Crisis Line: 1-800-309-2131 (24 hours/day)
  • Alameda County Crisis Support Services Local Text Line: TEXT SAFE TO 20121 (4:00 pm - 11:00 pm, 7 days/week). Available for Alameda County residents only.

If you wish to speak with a counselor about a non-emergency situation, please send a message via School Loop, email, or leave a voicemail for your student’s counselor with your question/concern. We will respond to School Loop messages, emails, and voicemails throughout each weekday. Counselors will also be available for virtual/distance counseling during this time through an application called Zoom. You can access this application on your phone or computer (https://zoom.us/download). Zoom will require you to create an account, which will include entering an email address. We have chosen to utilize Zoom because it is FERPA compliant.

Please be aware that all student questions and requests for appointments will be prioritized. However, we will do our best to address any questions you might have as well. To request a virtual appointment with a counselor, please send a message via School Loop, email, or leave a voicemail for your student’s counselor. If you have preferred days/times to meet, please indicate these as well. All appointments must be confirmed by your student’s counselor. Once confirmed, it is very important that you are available for your confirmed appointment time. If you are not available at your confirmed time, your appointment will be cancelled.

We hope this information is helpful. Thank you for your support and flexibility as we navigate this time together.

Take care,

Your AHS Counselors
